The LBJ Tropical Medical Center has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Oceania University of Medicine (OUM) in Samoa with the objective of advancing health care education across the Pacific.

The MOU was signed by the CEO of LBJ Hospital Scott Anesi and Professor Asiata Dr. Satupaitea Viali, Vice Chancellor and President of OUM, during a visit by an OUM delegation to American Samoa this week.

An announcement from LBJ says this partnership will open doors for joint clinical rotations, faculty exchanges, and expanded access to medical education for aspiring healthcare professionals in American Samoa. This would help strengthen the territory’s medical workforce and long-term healthcare capacity into the future.

Since its opening in 2002, Oceania University of Medicine has graduated several students from American Samoa.
