Leone and Nuuuli villages have been awarded $10,000 each as a one time monetary assistance by the Department of Homeland Security.

This is for the Adopt-a-Village Project which is funded by the National Tsunami Hazard Mitigation Program for tsunami preparedness projects.

Director Samana Semo Ve’avea said these villages were selected to receive the funding based on the impacts of the 2008 tsunami, coastal location, tsunami vulnerable population and presence of a village council.

A memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Department of Homeland Security and the village councils of Nuuuli and Leone, whereby the villages will promote tsunami safety and further develop identified tsunami evacuation sites.
