ASG Shipyard repairs broken crane on container ship

The ASG shipyard came to the rescue when a crane on a container ship broke down while in port earlier this week.

If the crane hadn’t been fixed, the unloading of several containers of food would not have been possible. And containers for StarKist Samoa products destined for the mainland could not have been loaded for the return voyage to the US.

CEO of the ASG Shipyard, Carlos Sanchez, said he was contacted Tuesday night that one of the two cranes on the container ship Mount Cameron—the one used to unload containers from the vessel’s hull—was broken.

The agents had searched around for help to fix the crane and apparently contacted Sanchez as the last resort.

After surveying the damage, Sanchez said he knew his crew could fix it.

A three member crew from the shipyard began working on the crane after 7, Wednesday morning, and didn’t stop until 1am, Thursday, when the crane was fixed and working again.

“I was told this is the first time that such repairs have been carried out on a container ship crane here on island,” a proud Sanchez told KHJ News.

He was told that if the crane hadn’t been repaired, the vessel would have returned to the mainland with all the containers that hadn’t been unloaded and without the StarKist containers.
