The Senate has confirmed William Spitzenberg as a member of the Board of Registration for Professional Surveyors. The vote was 12-0.

Spitzenberg was the only appointee who turned up for a confirmation hearing Monday.

The other two, Faafetai Wells and Faipaua Mareko were reported to be off island.

Senator Satele Lili’o praised Spitzenberg for his efforts to promote wellness and healthy lifestyles, especially for the elderly. Senator Ponemafua Tapeni, a former employee of the American Samoa Power Authority, said Spitzenberg was one of the engineers recruited by the late Utu Abe Malae to take charge of ASPA operations. Senator Malaepule Saite Moliga said Spitzenberg’s expertise as an engineer made him well qualified for the Board of Professional Surveyors.

Senators Muāgututi’a Tauoa and Togiola Tulafono gave their full endorsement of a son of their districts to serve on the Board.

Senate President Tuaolo Manaia Fruean asked Spitzenberg about the cause of the strong stench from the waste treatment plant at Utulei. He said that, lately, the stench has been overwhelming and was becoming a regular occurrence.

Spitzenberg said with the sewer system extended to Onesosopo, there’s more waste water being added to the treatment plant. He said ASPA had installed equipment to help reduce the stench and he didn’t know the status of the equipment. He said perhaps ASPA CEO Wallon Young would provide an answer to the Senate President’s question.
