A disaster was averted at the SNPF Plaza Savalalo around 7 last evening after firefighters battled a blaze, which is believed to have started in one of the retailers housed in the building.

As a result of the fire, the building which houses several companies, including Digicel Samoa, Fiji Airways, fast food outlet DMC, Farmers general retailer, a medical practice and the Ministry of Public Enterprises, will be closed today.

A Samoa Observer reporter at the scene reported it appeared the fire may have started on the first floor, but had not been confirmed.

Security officers said they heard noises coming from Frankie before they saw smoke coming from the Ministry of Public Enterprise.

The reporter said, as of 9:30 last night, there were no reports of injuries, but it is believed that the Frankie Supermarket and a few other offices were damaged.

Fire Commissioner Tanuvasa Petone Mauga confirmed that more than 30 firefighters worked to control the fire.

He said they could not identify the cause of the fire as yet, and it would take an extensive effort.
