An inmate is in serious condition in the Intensive Care Unit of the LBJ Hospital after he was found in the garden below Government House with multiple injuries early last Saturday morning.
The inmate was serving a jail sentence for the death of a man in Taputimu in 2020, and was kept at the Fagatogo Central Police Station.
When KHJ News asked Deputy Commissioner of Public safety Foifua Foifua Jr., he said he had not received any report about such an incident.
Police sources have confirmed the inmate was badly assaulted and he was “practically left for dead” behind a row of tea plants, where a taxi driver found him.
KHJ News understands that although this happened in the early hours of Saturday morning, and the man was admitted to the hospital that same day, the Criminal Investigations Division of DPS was only made aware of the case this morning.
Police officers are stationed outside the ICU, and the inmate is reported to be in serious condition.
There is suspicion the inmate had left the central station Friday night, and may have been drinking when he was assaulted.
