Passersby have noticed a two story building across from the Fagatogo marketplace at the entrance to the Fagatogo back road has been demolished, and the road has been widened and repaved.
It’s the start of the first road upgrade and drainage improvements for Fagatogo village in about 20 years.
Fagatogo House Representative Malaeoletalu Meleisio Gurr says one of the major improvements for their village is that natural springs are being rerouted into the streams, instead of causing flooding on the village roads and sometime homes during heavy rains.
The work is being done by Paramount Builders under the Governor’s Office Special Programs.
Fagatogo used to be the central business district with stores, such as South Pacific Traders, Kneubuhl’s, Forsgren’s, Reid’s and other well known business names.
Now, many of the buildings are not occupied. Malaeoletalu says the road upgrade and drainage improvements fit right in with the Village Council’s efforts to clean up the village and return Fagatogo to its glory days.
He is thankful to Governor Lemanu Peleti Mauga for making the Fagatogo improvements a reality.
