A well known long distance runner from Samoa, Darren Young, won the American Samoa Marathon yesterday.
Young is the husband of famous Samoan writer Lani Wendt Young, who was also in the field of about 60 marathoners yesterday.
The full marathon was 26.2 miles while the half marathon was 13.1 miles.
Darren Young was full of praise of the event.

His wife Lani also wrote a glowing report of the marathon and American Samoa in a post on Facebook.
She wrote, “American Samoa, you are amazing. Running from the Veterans Stadium to Fagaalu Park at 5:30am, and then back again, made me experience this beautiful place in a whole new way.”
Lani said she was thankful for our many clean bus stops, ideal for having a rest during the race, our stunning coastline, neat and well tended sidewalks and welcoming and friendly people.
She thanked the awesome team at South Pacific Watersports and Fitness for organizing a great event.
Muantawan Arsrairas of Thailand topped the women’s division.
Yesterday’s marathon was a record setting one for Dr. Brent Weigner. American Samoa is the 200th country where he’s run a marathon.
