A project which was conceived during the COVID pandemic is well underway at Pago Pago International Airport. It’s a food court area in the open space between the airline offices and the airport shops.

The contractor is RM construction owned by Ray Malari. The concept of the food court yard, which was planned when COVID-19 restrictions regarding social distancing were enforced, was to provide space for the public to sit, rest, or eat, while adhering to the restrictions.

DOC says in its First Quarter Performance Report for FY2023 that the need for resting areas where the general public can enjoy a meal, while waiting to board lights or for arriving passengers, is still relevant.

“There are seating areas all around the airport, but no tables where a family can sit and enjoy a meal and still hear airline announcements,” says the report.

DOC is collaborating with Port Administration on the project.

The contractor was selected through competitive bidding and, according to the DOC report, there were a handful of interested bidders and the Source Evaluation Board selected the lowest and most responsive bidder.

A Community Development Block Grant of $245,441 was allocated for the project.
