On Thursday, students of Pacific Horizon School conducted a field trip to the Leone Pala or wetlands.
.
Their tour guides were Leone Representative Andra Samoa and Ian Gurr of the Land Grant Division of ASCC.
The group was from Pacific Horizon School’s environmental science class and included 16 students and 1 teacher.
Explaining their visit, Kendra Pinsker said in the second quarter the students learned about the water system of
Tutuila. They studied the entire water cycle from the quantity of rain and watershed systems, to how their homes get water, and what happens to the waste water.
They also learned about the Wetlands Biome, and how it all ties together.
The field trip to the Leone Pala was to give students a hands on learning experience that will empower them with facts, scientific knowledge that will help them make informed decisions for their future and the future of their island.
Pinsker who moved to American Samoa 30 years ago described the environmental changes on Tutuila as “massive”.
“We need to learn more, as an island, about the affects climate change has on us already, and what we can do in the future to help mitigate that impact,” said Pinsker.
“These students are our future’s hope. I am doing what I can to make sure they have the knowledge and understanding to make informed decisions for the future of our island.”
