Top high school science students will be presenting papers in the Department of Education’s Annual Science Symposium at the DYWA Tafuna Conference Room beginning at 8:45.

Dr. Jose Rose of the Office of Curriculum and Instruction said, all government and private high schools have been invited.

Forty-five students will be presenting their science research papers and the Top 10 will be selected for the Pacific Symposium in Hawaii in January. Six winners from the Pacific Symposium will go on to the nationals.

American Samoa has been sending finalists to compete in the Pacific Symposium and some have even won honors at the nationals. Such was the case with Tafuna High School graduate Andrew Pati Ah Young, who is now part of a company that’s researching a cure for cancer.

Ah Young said that during a recent visit that exposure to outside events, such as the Pacific Symposium, can open opportunities for local students.

The public is invited to today’s symposium which is from 8:45am to 1pm, at the DWYA Tafuna Conference Room.
