OMV to issue REAL IDs and drivers licenses Dec. 5th

The Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) is scheduled to begin issuing REAL ID drivers licenses and IDs next Monday, according to Deputy Commissioner of Public Safety Terry Letuli.

For those whose licenses have expired, and who are traveling to Hawaii and the mainland on Thursday night, OMV is expediting the issuance of their IDs and licenses but they must provide their airline ticket to prove they’re leaving.

Letuli said, the requirements for the REAL ID licenses and IDs, which can only be issued to US nationals and citizens, are more stringent than what OMV required for American Samoa drivers licenses in the past.

Proof must be provided for identity, such as Social Security and residency.

For identity, one can provide a passport, a birth certificate with photo ID; or a Photo ID such as a voter ID or old drivers license.

For proof of Social Security number, you can provide a Social Security card or check stub showing your Social Security number or tax document, which shows your SSN.

For proof of residency, the choices are an ASPA or ASTCA bill showing your name and PO Box, a bank statement, voter ID, or an affidavit certifying that you are a resident.

American Samoa is the only US jurisdiction that has not complied with the REAL ID mandate and has been given until May 2023 to become compliant. After that deadline, the current American Samoa drivers licenses will no longer be accepted for travel into the US or inter-state and entry into federal buildings.

Deputy Commissioner Letuli said, DPS is consulting the Attorney General’s office about drivers licenses for non-US nationals and citizens before releasing details.
