Director of the Department of Marine Resources, Archie Taotasi Soliai, has again made a plea for US tuna boats—that supply tuna to the local cannery—to be given Small Island Developing States (SIDS) status.

He was addressing hundreds of delegates to the annual meeting of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission, or the Tuna Commission, the world body that regulates fishing in these parts. The WCPFC is currently meeting in Vietnam.

Soliai drew attention to the dwindling number of tuna vessels now fishing in Pacific waters overseen by the Commission, and recommended that they be given SIDS status.
