
The new Lions Park will be opened next Friday, and ASG is planning a block party to mark the occasion. Think no cars, vendors galore, games, food and entertainment. The plans include busing in public elementary and high schools, from across Tutuila to Lions Park.
Questions sent to Director of Education Talauega Dr. Samasoni Asaeli were referred to the Governor’s Senior Executive Assistant Aoelua Solomona Aoelua, and Assistant Chief of Staff Lydia Amisone. They have yet to respond.
A school principal said, the initial plan was for all students of public schools to attend but this has been changed. Only 30% of big schools and 20% of small schools will join. Consent forms will be given to parents and only children whose parents agree will attend.
When KHJ News visited the park yesterday, the planning committee for the event was having a walk through the site and going over plans.
Work was still continuing on some of the bathroom facilities and courts. The side of the park, across from the Territorial Correctional Facility, has been covered with sand.
According to Paris and Recreation Director Ken Tupua — on Thursday night, the road will be blocked off from in front of the TCF, up to the ANZ Tafuna branch while vendors set up for the block party which is from 11 am to 3 pm, on Friday, October 6th.
KHJ News has received calls from concerned parents and members of the public, pointing out that having thousands of students in a congested space is asking for trouble. They think traffic will be a nightmare.
Some parents say students lost instruction time during the COVID pandemic and this is the time to make up for it, not have more fun activities. They also note that White Sunday weekend and their children are busy with rehearsals and preparations for their big day.
