The Samoa Ministry of Health is monitoring for further cases of dengue fever, after 6 cases were diagnosed last month.
Acting Director General of Health, Tagaloa Dr. Robert Thomsen, told a National Emergency Operations Committee press conference on Wednesday that MOH has been monitoring the situation; but it’s not at a stage where they would declare an outbreak of the mosquito borne virus.
Health workers have also been dealing with an increase in influenza cases, which has reached more than 200 daily —according to Tagaloa, who is not ready to predict if the outbreak has peaked.
He said, the flu is easily transmitted and that influenza B is prevalent at present.
But he warned that as anyone can get the B virus, they can then easily contract the A virus.
Tagaloa said, that as Samoa’s international borders are opening next month, they are preparing for an influx of influenza cases and more likely an increase in COVID-19 cases.
