This morning in the Senate, the Chairman of the Public Works Committee Senator Satele Lili’o Satele expressed thanks for the quick response from government agencies to clear roads and restore road access to areas that suffered damages from wave action Thursday through Saturday.

Satele said the weekly inspections by Governor Lemanu Peleti Mauga have helped with infrastructure projects across the territory, adding that the Governor was injured during an inspection last week.

Satele said he had a chance to inspect the island from the eastern end to the western end and noticed that the triangular sea walls did the job of protecting against wave action.

He said Aunu’u island, which was under siege by the sea, needs fresh water as the salinity of the island’s water supply after weather incidents such as the one last week makes it unsuitable for consumption.

Senator Faiivae Alex Iuli decried the poor communications leaving the island without any prior warning about the rising seas.

He said the radio stations didn’t broadcast any warnings about the high surf on Thursday and residents were unprepared.

He said the Senate should look into this breakdown in communications.
