“I’ve never seen anything like it,” is the reaction from Rev Tevita Paea one of the leaders of the Tongan Community Church about the humanitarian relief drive for Tonga. “It’s just been phenomenal”.

Rev Paea said the Tongan community, after seeing the impact of the volcanic eruption and tsunami, sprung into action to send help as soon as possible.

“We knew what’s available in stores after the disaster would run out quickly and ships will be arriving late, so we wanted to collect food, clothing, money, whatever we could send from here,” said Paea.

He said individual families are also sending their own assistance to Tonga aside from their community collection.

Now the Tongan community is joining the ASG-led appeal for Tonga.

The 2020 census showed there were about 4000 Tongans residing in the territory.

“Every family was affected by this tragic disaster,” said Rev Paea. “I guess that’s why there’s been an overwhelming response to the relief drive. People have seen the videos and photos of the aftermath.”

Rev Paea said they are moved by the generous response, “and we say thank you American Samoa.”

The relief drive for Tonga continues tomorrow to Saturday at the Fake at Suiga ula. on Saturday 15 other sites around the island will be receiving donations.

Rev Paea says they plan to ship all the donated supplies to Tonga on the vessel Papuan Chief, February 15th.
