Census 2020: 49,710, a drop of 10.5% over 2010

As of April 1, 2020 American Samoa’s population was 49,710, a drop of 10.5% from the 2010 census population of 55,519.

The US Census Bureau today released the 2020 Census population and housing unit counts for American Asmara and the other territories.

Tuala-uta District still has the largest population, 22,827 and is the only district that had an increase in population.

All others registered a decrease.

Mauputasi had the second highest population in 2020 -8,568, then Alataua with 4,293 and Ituau with 3,431.

Manua’s population, dropped from 1,143 in 2010 to 832 in 2020.

Sa’ole district’s population was nearly half what it was in 2010, dropping from 2,187 to 1,158 in 2020. Vaifanua District faced a 41.6 % drop in population…it had 2545 people in 2010 but had only 1,487 in 2020.

The village with the biggest population is Tafuna with 7,988, followed by Nu’uuli with 4,991, Iliili had 3,073, Pago Pago had 3,000 and Faleniu with 1,953.

Swains Island registered 17 residents in 2010 but had none in 2020.

The housing unit count was 11,807 in 2020, representing an increase of 7.7% from the 2010 Census housing unit count of 10,963.
