Owner takes issue with story on contract for new hospital

Mr Mark Lively, the owner of Lively Architects of Honolulu, has commented on our reporting of the award of the design and engineering contract for the new hospital,

He said in an email that the focus of our story was on Lively Architects when more attention should have been paid to the other partners in this venture.

He pointed out that KYA Architects has substantial experience with healthcare facilities while another partner, Frank Swaans, who’s listed as Vice President Global Healthcare Services has lifetime experience as a hospital planner, involved with major hospitals around the US.

KYA Architects is a Honolulu-based company and its website shows that it designed the Administration and Allied Health Facilities, University of Hawaii at West Oahu, the Pali Momi Bone and Joint Center and a pharmacy remivation for Queens Medical Center.

Other featured projects are airport terminals, banks, cafes and schools.

Mr Lively said of himself that he has over 35 years of experience serving American Samoa, and is only a small component of the team.

He said they will ensure the new facility meets the needs of this community.

KHJ News explained to Mr Lively that we highlighted his experience in American Samoa, including the buildings his company designed, so that listeners have some understanding and familiarity with the company that’s been chosen to design the territory’s new hospital.
