House approves bill to remove CPA qualification for Territorial Auditor

The House of Representatives has passed in final reading the administration bill which amends the requirement for the Territorial Auditor to be a US certified public accountant.

The vote was 11 for and 1 against. The dissenting vote was cast by Rep Andra Samoa. Eight faipule were absent,

One of the budget items in the supplemental appropriations is $150,000 for an adjustment for the Territorial Auditor’s salary and personnel costs for the Territorial Audit Office.

When Senate President Tuaolo Fruean asked the Governor’s Chief of Staff Tuimavave Tauapa’i Laupola about this funding, he said it was to recruit CPAs and upgrade the office so it can carry out audits of the government.

Tuaolo followed up, “So if we ask for an audit of the Medicaid Office TAO can do one? Tuimavave replied yes.
