The International Labor Organisation has teamed up with the Samoa Workers Congress to help those left unemployed from the effects of global COVID-19 pandemic.

TV1Samoa reports the organizations have held workshops geared at the recently unemployed to help them cope with the impacts of sudden loss of jobs.

The Samoa Workers Congress is a national umbrella group that workers unions and associations come to for help in many areas.

President of SWC Gatoloai Tili Afamasaga said they carried out research on the effects of COVID-19 lockdowns, especially on the tourism industry.

“Our research found that more than 200 had lost jobs and some have had to work shorter hours meaning less pay,” she said.

SWC saw a need to help the unemployed to cope and also help them find ways to implement family developments.

“We hope we can continue to work with the various workers associations and Samoa Qualifications Authority to provide assistance for their members,” said Gatoloai.
