The Samoa Government has ordered a review of the registration process for Samoans wanting to get work overseas under the seasonal workers scheme.

This follows the aborted chaotic registration meeting on Monday which saw some people rushed to hospital for treatment.

Caretaker Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi said on Radio 2AP that many issues have surfaced that now have to be addressed to improve the selection process for these jobs.

Openings for workers in Australia caused the Ministry of Commerce Industry & Labour to call workers to come and register. Close to a thousand prospective workers crammed the hall which was an unexpectedly large number.

Tuilaepa says some companies overseas are wanting to take people that worked for them in the past.

“This is not fair on some people who missed out on jobs earlier. We must look at an equal distribution of opportunities for everyone,” he said.

This may be easier said than done as MCIL has said the employers have said they don’t want to waste resources on training new recruits.

Tuilaepa said some companies want at least 60 percent of new recruits to be experienced staff.

Workers are also starting to look more at opportunities in Australia as they offer higher wages than New Zealand companies.
