There’s still no comment from Commissioner of Public Safety Le’i Sonny Thompson concerning an incident in Vaitogi early Sunday morning in which cops were reported to have aimed weapons at a group of bystanders who were trying to help an injured officer.

The officer was in a police unit which skidded off the road and landed in a ditch.

Police sources have told KHJ News that he was one of three newly sworn in officers in the vehicle and was ejected from the unit when it crashed.

The driver, according to our sources, has been on the force for about a year.

The sources said the injured officer was treated at the LBJ Hospital and was later released on Sunday.

The police unit was reported to be in hot pursuit of a Titan truck and was heading from Vaitogi village towards the Vaitogi/ Iliili intersection when it ran off the road and crashed in the ditch.

A woman who lives near the crash scene said while she, her daughter, nephews and their friends were trying to help the injured cop, another police unit rolled up.

She said a female officer, believed to be a lieutenant with almost 20 years on the force, and a long serving male officer, exited. The woman said the female officer cocked a rifle and aimed it at them while the male officer walked around the crash site with a handgun also aimed at them.
