A woman wants answers from the Department of Public Safety concerning an incident early yesterday morning in which a cop allegedly cocked a rifle at by standers who were trying to help an officer who was injured when the police vehicle he was in ran off the road and went into a ditch.
The woman, who did not wish her name to be used in our broadcast, said that the police unit was in pursuit of a Titan truck that was heading from Vaitogi village towards the intersection with Iliili, when the police vehicle skidded off the road and crashed into the ditch.
The woman who lives close by the scene of the accident said she and her daughter whose house is next to hers, heard a loud crash and went to check the cause.
Photos from the scene showed that the DPS unit nose dived into the ditch and the front tire on the passenger side came off.
The woman said she saw that one of the occupants was injured.
“I got there and they were putting the injured cop on his side so I told them to leave him on his back.”
Her daughter and, nephews and a group of friends then approached and helped.
She related that everything was cool until another police unit pulled up and a female cop jumped out with a rifle
The woman said that the officer cocked the rifle and pointed it at them.
Meanwhile a male officer got out and walked around holding a gun aimed towards them while they were trying to help the cop who was injured.
The injured officer was later transported from the scene in a police unit.
According to the woman she, her daughter and their friends were traumatized from the cops pointing guns at them while they were only trying to help.
She said police take an oath to protect the people but what they experienced with the gun toting cops yesterday did not make them feel safe one bit
“Where was the protection?”
”Why were guns being pulled out at a car accident?” she asked,
KHJ News sought comments from DPS Commissioner Le’i Sonny Thompson but he did not respond as of news time.
