The American Samos Community College is getting a new cafeteria next year.

Ground was broken yesterday at the constructuion site yesterday attended by Governor Lolo Moliga, directors, the President of ASCC and the Chairman and members of the Board of Higher Education.

Director of Public Works Faleosina Voigt said the building will be two stories.

The first floor will have space for four vendors, a dining facility, offices and restrooms for staff.

The top floor will have offices and restrooms for students.

The design for the new building was done by Public Works and construction should take 10 months.

The winning bid by contractor H&H was $1,932,213.

Governor Lolo Moliga said COVID-19 has paved the way for the territory to get funding to carry out much needed projects such as this.

The project is financed with the $35 million grant that ASG received under the CARES Act.

He pointed out however that existing buildings at the college needed to be repaired and he instructed the Public Works Director to have her engineers review the buildings and come up with a plan to repair them.

“If there’s no money, have Public Workd do the job,” he instructed.

Lolo praised contractor H&H, whose president Mr O was present.

He said when the company is awarded a project it doesn’t ask for payment first but carries out the work and then wait to be paid.

In contrast he said local companies who bid for jobs show up with a wheelbarrow when an excavator is needed to do the work.

H&H is also the contractor for the gymnasium at Pago Pago Elementary and extension of the Tafuna Elementary gymnasium.
