Captain Vaimasenuu Zita Martel and her all female crew had to settle for second place in today’s fautasi race to celebrate the 70th anniversary of St Joseph’s College.

On the final stretch to the finish line in front of the new Vaisigano Bridge in Apia Harbor, the orange clad crew highlighting UN efforts to stop violence against women nearly over took the Alfred/Deporres fautasi for first place.

Still it was a historical race for the all female “Fautasi o Toa”. It out rowed three fautasi with all male crews: Dieter / Aquinas which placed third, Marcellin/Orleans which was 4th and Darnard/Avila which finished last.

As witnessed by the hundreds lining the Apia waterfront, there is room for more all women crews, able to compete on equal strength and agility against the men.
