As of this morning, 162 pet owners seeking treatment for their cats and dogs at the Veterinarian Clinic at the Department of Agriculture have been turned away because the clinic doesn’t have any medication, vaccines or supplies on hand.
Posted at the door of the clinic are notices saying, “Sorry no medication, we have no vaccinations. Please refer all complaints to the main office (director/deputy)
“We are not a shelter. No trapping, no dumping animals.”

When KHJ News was at the clinic this morning a man turned up with his dogs and was told the clinic could not help him because it doesn’t have any medication and supplies.

“The clinic has hit rock bottom with no solution to replenish medication or supplies to help the animals,” said Tanya Tarasawa who is looking after the clinic.

“We are doing what little that we can do for deworming and we have injectable medication called Penicillin G that is given for infections but it does not cure everything!”
She said in order to get the clinic up and running again, a US certified veterinarian must be hired to purchase through her/his license the medication and controlled drugs “needed to help the animals, do surgeries and to again control the animal population that we see being dumped all over the island.“

A concern is the spread of leptospirosis. Tarasawa aid there’s been several cases of cats and dogs seen at the clinic with leptospirosis and the lack of vaccines and supplies hampers their ability to treat affected animals, And the worry is that if this is allowed to continue, the chances of lepto spreading to humans is increased.
