A Samoan author has called for more books to be written for children in the Samoan language.
TV1Samoa quotes Momoe Malietoa von Reiche saying it is imperative that more books be written in Samoan to ensure the language and culture is maintained.
The writer/artist pointed out that the need to teach children to read when young will bode well for their future.
‘’If they are taught to read at a young age, they will grow up wanting to read more owns and broaden their knowledge,’’ she said.
The Nelson Memorial Public Library told the television station that less than 10% of their children’s books are in the Samoan language.
von Reiche owns operates Madd Gallery that also runs dance and drama classes for young people in the Samoan language.
