Quarantine Over for Sailboat Galatea

The 14-day quarantine was over last Wednesday for a yacht that was allowed to enter port because it was taking on water.

The male captain and two women on board are now free to come on shore to make arrangements for repairs to their sailboat’s engine.

Director of Health Motusa Tuileama Nua says customs and immigration have already given clearance for the yacht and the Department of Health no longer has any reason to continue monitoring the vessel.

The Galatea had first notified the Harbor Master that their engine was down and sought permission for the Galatea to enter port, but was denied.

It then radioed in that it was taking on water and was granted permission by Port Administration Director Taimalelagi Dr. Claire Poumele.

The three occupants are US citizens.

The captain was unable to provide a port clearance from Honolulu which was its last port, but because it was in distress and the occupants are US citizens it was cleared to remain in port until it was able to get repairs done.

The Department of Health provided food, and water for the yacht while it was under quarantine.

Harbor Master Silila Patane said he has provided the captain information on where it’s engine can be repaired.

He added that the captain has requested permission to visit Manu’a but he has advised against that and for the sailboat to leave local waters once their engine has been fixed.
