In Samoa, two customs officers and their driver have been detained and quarantined after forcing their way into a COVID-19 quarantine site on Wednesday morning.

The Samoa Observer reports, the incident happened at the Insel Ferhman Hotel after security officers could not stop the men driving into the restricted area.

“According to the security on duty and our security, Sagele the driver forced his way into the driveway, even though the security informed him they cannot enter,” said a hotel employee.

He said because they entered a restricted area, the appropriate authorities were informed immediately, such as the Ministry of Health.

The Minister of Customs and Revenue, Tialavea Tionisio Hunt and the Revenue Commissioner, Matafeo Avalisa Viali-Fautuaali’i, said the staff were delivering letters.

“They were delivering letters informing businesses of ongoing training for the tax invoice monitoring system,” said Matafeo.

She said her staff shouldn’t have entered knowing it was a quarantine site.

Matafeo said that safety was a priority for the government as a whole.

“And if that means my staff have to be quarantined then so be it, but we will not take any risks,” she added.
