
American Samoa joins the international wave of marches to spotlight inequality in America particularly police brutality against African Americans.
Images of Samoans across the United States, from the tattooed young man seen hanging from a traffic light, to an all Samoan security crew guarding a Nike store in downtown LA to a lavalava clad male hugging a police officer, and Samoans cleaning up after the riots have been shared on social media by Samoans across the world.
Young adults are organizing the American Samoa for BlackLivesMatter Movement, a march and wave for Saturday, June 13. Marissa Afuola, one of the movers behind the event said while the territory is far removed from the events taking place across America, many of our families have African American connections through marriage.
She says peaceful American Samoa should not be complacent about race issues, and this is an opportunity to put a spotlight on inequality,
