A total of 316 traffic violations and crimes were recorded in the Department of Public Safety holiday enforcement from Dec 20, 2019- Jan 3, 2020.
According to stats provided by Commissioner of Public Safety Le’i Sonny Thompson there were 69 speeding citations, 6 vehicle accidents, 4 DUIs, 4 for open containers in vehicles, 27 seat belt violations, 25 child restraint infractions and 181 miscellaneous violations.
Le’i explained that any traffic violations, minor or major, especially repetitive occurrences or combination thereof, if not strictly enforced, can and will most certainly result in either destruction of properties or a loss of life.
This is particularly so with violations of speeding and being under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
The commissioner appeals to the public to assist DPS by either identifying or reporting violators on the road to DPS.
He said the best weapon in combating crimes of any kind is community involvement and cooperation.
DPS is doing a comparative analysis of how this year’s holiday enforcement stacks up with previous years.
