DOA vet is reassigned to manage livestock unit

Department of Agriculture Veterinarian Dr. Ken Lameta, the target of a barrage of complaints from pet owners, will remain at DOA but he has been reassigned to manage the livestock unit.

He is being moved from the Veterinary Clinic to the department’s main office.

Meanwhile, the Veterinary Clinic will be under the supervision of Tanya Tarasawa and will be used by Alofa Mo Meaola for clinics for dogs and cats.

The changes were outlined in a letter dated October 23rd from the Director of Agriculture Filifaatali Mike Fuiava to DOA employees.

He said the changes will better serve the needs of “small animals clients.”

Copies of the letter were sent to Governor Lolo Moliga, Lt Governor Lemanu, Attorney General Talauega and chairman of the Alofa Mo Meaola.

Founder of the organization Mona King welcomed news that Alofa Mo Meaola will have use of the Veterinarian Clinic. She said this will be on a 30 day trial basis.

Alofa mo Meaola is bringing a veterinarian from Kauai, Hawaii, Dr. Melissa Shaw, who arrives Monday night and will be here until Nov 6.

King stressed that animals will be seen by appointment only except for emergencies.  She said walk-ins will probably have to wait awhile, so it’s better to make an appointment.

Alofa mo Meaola will be charging for the visiting vet’s services.  King said they received great response to their appeal for donations and are grateful, but they still need cleaning supplies, blankets, or dog food.
