The American Samoa Power Authority is getting a grant of $1.8 million for Fiscal Year 2019 under the Office of Insular Affairs Energizing Insular Communities Program.
The funding will go towards the territory wide streetlight LED retrofit.
According to Acting Director of ASPA Wallon Young, ASPA is planning to upgrade street lights across Tutuila island so this award could not have come at a better time.
He added the project will take public street lighting in the territory to a new level; and lower energy consumption and overall costs.
Assistant Secretary of Interior for insular and International Affairs Douglas Domenich informed Governor Lolo Moliga of the grant award in an October 10 letter.
He told the governor at this time, OIA is unable to fund additional projects with this year’s funding.
The project to replace the street lights is administered jointly by ASPA and the Territorial Energy Office.
