The Samoa Land Transport Authority has closed the cross island road because of treacherous weather conditions on high grounds.
Known as Falealili Street, this road heads up Mt. Vaea from the capital Apia and across to the southern coast of the island of Upolu.
Swirling winds and heavy rain make for unsafe driving conditions at times like these with the gusty winds and heavy rainfall from the depression that has been around the islands since last weekend.
Meanwhile, the Samoa Shipping Corporation has canceled all ferry sailings between Upolu and Savai’i as well as to American Samoa.
According to TV1Samoa, the corporation has not given a time when the ships will be able to sail again.
SSC said that the safety of passengers and crew are the utmost priority for them and the current weather conditions are not safe for any sailing between the islands.
It is not clear when the road closure and the shipping lanes will be reopened but the adverse weather conditions seem to have abated with the depression moving away from Samoa at 2 o’clock this morning.
