Friday is last day to pick up Gita food assistance

Friday is the last day for those who applied for the Hurricane Gita disaster food assistance to pick up teir benefits from the department of Human And Social Services.

The benefit amounts to $185 per person and is made available under the American Samoa Disaster Relief Food Assistance Program.

Director of Human and Social Services Muavaefaatasi John Suisala says staff have been on KVZK-TV to announce the deadline and DHSS is doing everything possible to contact and inform individuals who have yet to pick up their benefits to do so as after Friday, February 15,  they will no longer be able to do so.

A total of 2,325 very low income individuals who were affected by Tropical Cyclone Gita, who did not receive FEMA assistance and met residential and immigration requirements were approved.

As of closing time Wednesday afternoon, 2,138 individuals had  already picked up their benefits in the amount of $185 per person from the ASNAP Office in Utulei.

A total of 187 individuals have yet to claim their benefits.

Friday, is the absolute last day to pick up the  $185 couponsand the last day to redeem them is Monday, February 18.

Muavaefaatyasi says, “Most of the individuals who had not yet picked up their benefits  left island before the benefits were distributed and have yet to return to American Samoa.

A number of individuals are unreachable as their telephone numbers have been disconnected, changed or they left the wrong contact information”.
