Residents turning up to post letters or packages at the Post Office today were not able to because the Post Office was closed.

The reason is because the postal facility took an overflow of water from another part of the building.

Duke Gonzales, Strategic Communications Specialist for the US Postal Service in Honolulu told KHJ News that water was  leaking into the Post Office and this is the reason why they had to close.

The landlord for the Lumanai Building, the Development Bank of American Samoa, had a crew cleaning up the facility for most of today.

Some people who had gone there reported that there was a bad stench.

Gonzales said that the Post Office, will reopen as soon as the issues with the facility are resolved.

It is not the first time that the Post Office has taken on water flowing from another part of the Lumanai Building.

Tonight is the last Hawaiian Air flight that is bringing off island absentee ballots that would be counted in tomorrow’s elections.

How those ballots would be handled with the Post Office closed remains to be seen.
