A hotel worker at a beach resort in Samoa has died while trying to rescue a tourist who had been swept out to sea by a strong rip.

Newsline Samoa reports that Talalelei Vou worked as a porter and driver for the Return to Paradise Resort at Lefaga on the southern coast of Upolu island.

Talalelei along with his manager Mika, were the first responders to the incident, managing to extend a lifebuoy that ultimately saved the guest’s life.

“Unfortunately, Talalelei was picked up by a wave and we lost sight of him for a short time, and despite everyone’s best effort we were unable to revive him,” said Resort General Manager Mel To’ailoa.

She said Talalelei, who was married only last year to his wife Sarah, had died doing what he loved doing, which was taking care of people.

Toailoa said that there is a warning sign and notification not to enter the part of the channel where the tourist got into trouble.

A special farewell service for Talalelei Vou at the resort chapel was attended by guests and staff members last Sunday.
