Samoas Still Differ on Issuing Tsunami Warnings

There’s still a sticky point between the weather offices of the two Samoa when it comes to issuing warnings for tsunamis.

As the head of Samoa’s Meteorological Services Mulipola Ausetalia Titimaea explains it, American Samoa relies on information from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

Whereas Samoa has its own network of seismic centers and will make its own determination whether a tsunami warning is to be issued after an earthquake.

Because Radio 2AP broadcasts are heard in the territory, residents would hear tsunami warnings from Samoa after an earthquake reaches a certain threshold. But there may not be any warning from the National Weather Service for the same event because the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center doesn’t deem it necessary.

Mulipola, who’s leading a six member delegation from Apia to the post cyclone season two Samoa meeting being held at the Tradewinds Hotel says they are still discussing how best to address this.
