Director of Education, Dr Ruth Matagi Tofiga, isn’t happy with our report about public school teachers who didn’t get paid with the rest of the ASG work force last Monday.
A group of teachers did not receive their direct deposits at midnight Friday, March 17, and after waiting a few days without a word about their paychecks, decided to come to KHJ News in the hope we could get an answer from the DOE main office about their checks.
The Director said in an email that we should have checked with her first before running our story.
According to the DOE director, there are various reasons for the teachers not receiving their paychecks on time, including not filling in sick or annual leave requests.
She pointed out that the teachers were told they will have their checks on Treasury’s supplemental run, which was on Tuesday.
However ASG did not have a supplemental run that day.
The DOE checks only came out Wednesday, when Treasury issued the supplemental check run.
All the teachers who did not receive their direct deposits and paper checks were issued their checks that day.
The teachers said that they only came to the press after not getting an answer from the DOE main office.
