Samoa yesterday broke ground at the site where the landing station for the Tui Samoa Cable will be built at the old dormitories of Samoa College in Vaivase.

Minister of Telecommunications Afamasagi Rico Tupai said Tui Samoa Cable should be on line later this year resulting in faster and cheaper internet services.

He said at present Samoa is depending on satellite connections which is interrupted whenever there’s foul weather.

Afamasaga said Samoa is also getting connected to the Southern Cross and Pacific Cable and by the year 2020 Samoa will  have 4 undersea fiber optic cables.

The Minister mentioned several countries who are signing up with the Tui Samoa Cable.

American Samoa was not included in his list though ASTCA officials said they held talks with the Samoa officials in Honolulu last month with a view to signing up on the Tui Samoa Cable.
