Yesterday was a day of celebration for the Catholic Church in Americna Samoa when three new permanent deacons were ordained.
The Mass of Ordination at the Holy family Cathedral was led by Bishop Peter Brown with priests of the local diocese concelebrating.
Children, parents, friends and relatives of the deacons and their wives from across the territory and off island were also present.
This is the third class of deacons to be ordained in the local diocese.
The three permanent deacons who were consecrated are the last remaining from a class that started out with several candidates.
Vicar General Monsignor Viane Etuale was in charge of the deaconate program which began under Rtd. Bishop John Quinn Weitzel and continued under Bishop Peter Brown.
The deacons are Michael & Frances Leau of Aua Parish, Chaira & Sherry Uiagalelei of Futiga Parish and Laloasi & Ana Se’ui of Leone Parish.
Deacons are men who are called to serve not be
served, and they assist the bishop and priests in pastoral duties but cannot perform Mass or the sacraments.
The theological curriculum delivered over several years was studied by both the deacons and their wives.
