Two pregnant women who contracted Zika have given birth to healthy babies at LBJ Hospital.

Emergency Preparedness Director at the Department of Health, Ben Sili, has confirmed that two of the 14 local women who were diagnosed with the Zika virus have given birth to their babies without any visible signs of infections and complications from Zika.

In South America many babies born of women who contracted Zika are born with smaller than normal heads, a condition known as microcephaly.

Sili said initial reports from the hospital indicate that the babies are alright and don’t show any physical problems,

However they will not know for sure until they receive a detailed medical report.

These are the only two babies born of the 14 pregnant women confirmed to have contracted Zika.

According to the Department of Health’s latest report on the spread of Zika, the number of suspected cases in the territory has reached 690.

Suspected cases are those who have been seen at the Emergency Room of the LBJ Hospital or the Community Health Centers with symptoms of Zika.

29 are confirmed Zika cases, and 14 of them are pregnant woman.

As for the flu like illness that has afflicted hundreds of people since before Flag Day in April, reports from DOH indicate that the spread of the flu may be waning.

Dr. Saipale Fuimaono who heads the Tafuna Family Health Center says there’s fewer patients being treated for this flu compared to when it first started.
