Fono Session Concludes, Governor’s Bills Approved

The Fono wrapped up its third regular session yesterday and almost all of the governor’s measures that were submitted for review have been approved.

The governor’s legislative package dominated the agenda of the Fono session in the just concluded session and the few pieces of legislation that were introduced by lawmakers themselves were mainly non binding  House resolutions asking for infrastructure projects in districts.

A bill by Fofo faipule Puletu Dick Koko to put a tax on imported water has been tabled in committee after one hearing with a recommendation for changes to the proposed legislation.

The controversial bill by Rep Anthony Allen to increase salaries of lawmakers by $20,000, never made it out of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee, led by Senator Laolagi Vaeao.

The bill prompted the first real demonstration in the territory in about 30 years, by the United Citizens of American Samoa group.

KHJ News understands the administration is seeking increases to container inspection fees , an amendment to the law for limited liability companies and an increase in the Retirement Fund contribution, in the next session.
