Almost 500 Zika virus protection kits for pregnant mothers have arrived from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

The kits include larvicide tablets which kill larvae or baby mosquitoes, repellent spray for the clothes, repellent spray for the body, mosquito nets, condoms and a thermometer.

Other than mosquitoes, its believed that the Zika virus can also be transmitted sexually hence the presence of condoms in the kits.

The exact number of kits received from the CDC is 490 according to Department of Health epidemiologist Magele Scott Anesi.

The kits will be distributed at the community health centers at Amouli, Tafuna and Leone as well as the LBJ Hospital, beginning today.

DOH is also awaiting kits from the World Health Organization to help protect the target population of pregnant mothers from Zika.

Lead CDC Epidemiologist who’s where to work with local health authorities on controlling the spread of the virus, Dr. Thane Hancock, says government departments also distributed larvicide tablets during the clean up of Ili’ili, Tafuna and Leone, the three villages with the most number of suspected Zika cases.
