MLB’s Sean Manaea on The Show!

The 93KHJ studios were abuzz today as Major League Baseball pitcher Sean Manaea kicked off his highly anticipated visit to American Samoa. Manaea, known for his no-hitter and stellar pitching career, returned to the islands for the first time in a decade, marking his second trip to reconnect with his roots and give back to the community.

“It’s great to be back,” Manaea shared during his on-air interview. “The last time I visited was ten years ago, and it’s incredible to reconnect with the place where my dad grew up and show my family our roots. This trip is about honoring my heritage and sharing my love for baseball with the local community.”

During the live broadcast, Manaea spoke about his upbringing, career highlights, and his commitment to mentoring the next generation of athletes. Joining him in studio were Pastor Ruben Gonzalez of American Samoa Little League and Chester Tala, girls’ softball pitching coach. The trio highlighted the importance of nurturing young talent in baseball and softball through clinics and community events.

As part of his visit, Manaea will lead a pitching clinic for boys, while Coach Chester Tala will work with young female athletes on their pitching fundamentals. The clinics are part of a broader effort to promote baseball and softball in American Samoa, with an opening ceremony set for 8:00 AM on Saturday at the stadium. Attendees can look forward to games, food, and exciting demonstrations by Manaea and other coaches.

“We’re thrilled to have Sean here,” said Pastor Ruben Gonzalez. “His presence is a huge inspiration to the young athletes on the island. This is a chance for them to learn from one of the best and see that dreams of playing in the big leagues are possible.”

Manaea’s visit also includes a special recognition by the American Samoa Senate. A resolution has been introduced to officially welcome him to the territory, an honor typically reserved for extraordinary contributions to the community. “I’m incredibly honored,” said Manaea. “This visit means so much to me, and I’m grateful for the warm welcome.”

The MLB star’s week-long itinerary includes reconnecting with family, visiting his father’s childhood home, and engaging with fans and players across the island. His visit underscores the growing popularity of baseball in American Samoa, a region already celebrated for producing NFL talent.

“Baseball is taking off here,” Manaea said. “If I can inspire even one kid to pursue their passion, then this trip will be a success.”
