Director of Homeland Security Samana Semo Ve’ave’a has confirmed that weapons and rounds, which were shipped through a local freight company, are dummies intended for training purposes.
Responding from off island to KHJ News questions, Samana said Customs only released the crates with the dummy weapons after his department produced a letter from the Attorney General’s Office authorizing them.
He said Customs didn’t “seize” the weapons, they just needed authorization from the AG’s Office before releasing them.
KHJ News reported in our evening bulletin yesterday that there was no paperwork, including authorization from either the AG or Commissioner of Public Safety, for the shipment.
Samana didn’t have the exact quantity of the training weapons that were brought in but said, they ordered quite a large number.
Concerning the training, he said the Federal Bureau of Investigations will be here in July to conduct active shooting training for first responders and more training will be conducted later in the year by a team from the University of Texas, which provided similar training last year for law enforcement officers.
