Interact Clubs clean up Lions Park to close their year

A clean up at Lions Park on Saturday, May 6, closed out the Interact Club year.

Interact is Rotary International’s service club for youth ages 12 to 18. Interact clubs are sponsored by individual Rotary clubs, which provide support and guidance, but they are self-governing and self-supporting.

About 60 students took part along with their school advisors. Special guests were the visiting Rotary District Governor Allan Smith and his wife Sue.

The Interact Club members from Tafuna High School, Manumalo Academy, Leone High School, Pacific Horizon and Samoana High School collected enough trash to fill 30 garbage bags.

After the clean up the clubs gave presentations about their service projects during the year, which ranged from gift giving at Christmas, to supporting Rheumatic Heart Disease prevention efforts, a forestry program and clean up projects.

Each of the graduating seniors was presented with a certificate and Interact sash to wear at their graduation. School advisors were given gifts and ulas.

Rotary Club Youth Committee Chair Pauga Joey Cummings said, “These five groups are just a start. We invite all high schools to start Interact Clubs. Starting a club is easy. A school need only to reach out to the Rotary Club of Pago Pago. We will provide sponsorship and start up funding. We believe in planting the seeds of community service as a means developing leadership skills in our young people.”
