Remember the Tafuna High School building that couldn’t be used because of cracks in the structure, a few months after it was completed?

Public Works is reported to have let out a new contract to repair the building, which was constructed by Nana’s company at a cost of more than $1 million.

The building was supposed to house a computer lab, a classroom for students with special needs and other classes. However, cracks started appearing in the ceiling and walls.

Despite the cracks, Public Works deemed the building safe but the Department of Education decided not to occupy the building for safety reasons.

An independent structural engineer, Will Sptizenberg, provided a report to DOE which said that there were structural issues, which needed to be addressed in order to solidify the building.

Now, Willis Construction has been awarded a contract of more than $700,000 to repair the building.

KHJ News was unable to get answers from Public Works as to why the original builder didn’t make the repairs, as part of the original contract.

Director of Public Works Faleosina Voigt is off island and Acting Director Laupule Tilei could not be reached yesterday.
