The Tafuna High School Gymnasium, which was closed by the Department of Health (DOH) last week because it was unsanitary and unsafe, has been reopened.

The gym was closed March 28, following an inspection by the Environmental Health Services which found the gym infested with rats, surrounded by overgrown grass, and piles of trash was collecting at the fence surrounding the gym.

DOH was also concerned about rusty and deteriorated beams and poles, which posed a safety hazard for students using the gym—not only for sports events but some classes as well.

Head of the Environmental Health Services at DOH, Aileen Solaita said they met with the principal and DOE on Monday for an update on clean up work.

The overgrown grass/weeds have been trimmed and trash alongside the fence has been removed.

DOH was told that the rusty and broken guard rails with sharp edges will be removed, and the deteriorated poles will be covered to prevent injuries.

DOE also revealed that there are plans to build a new gym for Tafuna.

Solaita said the gym was reopened with conditions following their meeting on Monday.
